Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Psychologists are actively involved in studying and understanding mental processes, brain functions, and behavior. The field of psychology is considered a "Hub Science" with strong connections to the medical sciences, social sciences, and education
Are you interested in a career in psychology research? Or are there questions about current theory or practice you are keen to investigate? Through this MRes you’ll develop knowledge and skills in research methods, plan and lead your own research project, and have an opportunity to further develop your research career for a range of different sectors.
Research skills and psychological knowledge is a wonderful combination with which to answer some of society’s most pressing questions. This course will provide you with a solid grounding in research methods in psychology and experience of planning and managing unique projects, with real-world answers.
Through a taught module covering research methods, one-to-supervision, and engagement with our Solent’s Researcher Development Programme, you’ll gain the necessary skills to conduct independent research in the future.
At Solent, the staff is skilled in both qualitative and quantitative research methods and assessments are based on real-world tasks, such as preparing funding applications, presenting research, and writing journal articles. This creates a portfolio of work for you to take forward.
Whether you’re a practitioner who would like to expand your understanding of how research is conducted to create evidence or would like to contribute to the evidence base, then this course can provide a fantastic foundation for you to carry out and implement research as part of your professional role.
If you’re interested in pursuing a research career in the public or voluntary sector, then this MRes will provide you with a solid foundation of research skills as well as experience in leading your own research project. This is also a great start to future Ph.D. or Professional Doctorate studies.
On successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to apply your research skills in a variety of different sectors and can be great preparation for Ph.D. or Professional Doctorate study.
This course will be of interest to anyone who wishes to learn more about the research process and how evidence is generated. You may be a practitioner wishing to conduct research in your area of practice now and in the future, or you may be considering a career in academic research. You’ll also have an opportunity to carry out research relevant to your workplace or professional area as a part of your studies. The skills acquired in this course are an asset for a range of sectors where research and evidence generation are critical.
Students will be well prepared for a wide range of roles after graduation, which include:
Researcher/data analyst in a range of different sectors
Practitioner researchers (allowing for upskilling in the current professional role)
Further study through Ph.D. or a Professional Doctorate training
Becoming a Researcher: The first steps
This module involves research methods training and the preparation of an advanced research project. Students are required to design a project, proposed by a member of staff or by the student on application to the course; however, the research must be developed by the student in order to develop research skills.
Advanced Research Project
This module involves the management and completion of an advanced research project, which students are required to carry out independently.
Becoming a Researcher: The next steps
This module will support the development of students in the supplementary skills needed for a career in research, whether in academia, statutory service, third sector or private sector. This will involve learning about the role of researchers in HE as well as other contexts, identifying funding opportunities, and developing career pathways.
Psychology students here at Solent have full access to modern, industry-standard facilities, including dedicated computing suits, specialist software, psychophysiological recording equipment, eye-tracking apparatus, and experimental cubicles.
Students will benefit from discipline-specific research methods teaching, but will also work independently to develop and lead their own research.

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:
IELTS minimum 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in reading, listening and speaking
TOEFL IBT 92 with a minimum of 22 in writing and a minimum of 19 in reading, listening and speaking
Duolingo English Language Test - 110 overall with a minimum 90 in each component
or equivalent.
Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.
