Over 90 per cent of the world’s goods are transported by sea, making shipping and shipping logistics a vital part of world trade. Solent University’s international shipping and logistics master’s degree will help you develop the key skills and knowledge required to tap into this exciting, global industry.

This Master's degree programme is designed to prepare highly qualified specialists and researchers able to engage in the intellectual and creative activity and to create favorable conditions for individuals to acquire a university master's degree, based on research and complying to a high technological level.

Shipping managers in the current marketplace need to understand all aspects of international supply chain management. As the shipping industry evolves towards an integrated, multimodal, door-to-door logistics approach, such knowledge becomes increasingly important.

Solent’s intellectually challenging international shipping and logistics master’s degree is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge sought after by employers within this dynamic industry. The module studied during the course aim to enable students to develop a detailed understanding of the operations and strategies of shipping as a single transport mode within the context of international multimodal logistics.

To complement their studies, past students have had the opportunity to visit key maritime organisations, such as the ports of Southampton, Antwerp and Rotterdam, the International Maritime Organization and the Baltic Exchange. Some of these visits were funded outside of the course fees.

Core Modules

• Maritime Management
  This module blends the complementary subjects of Strategic Management and Economics in the context of maritime and logistics organisations and the wider market environment.

• International Maritime Law
  This module provides the opportunity for the student to critically evaluate the development, aims and applications of International Maritime Law.

• Maritime Operations and Transport
  This module is aimed at delivering a highly intensive programme of study that will review specific requirements for these different vessels and the factors that influence the trade routes and drive the markets.

• Economics of International Trade and Shipping
  This module holds the key to international maritime management studies; as economics is the pivot on which global trade and shipping revolves.

• Research Methods and Proposal
  The module provides the opportunity to develop and carry out research applied to an area relevant to the programme of study and in an area of personal interest to the student and which is also relevant to a student’s future career.

• Supply Chain Management
  This module focuses on the global supply chain and logistics networks and the shipping industry’s role within it.

• Operational Risk Management
  This module aims at providing students with a practical understanding of the objectives and principles of risk assessment, and guide them through the process of risk management.

Project:

• Maritime professionals need to be skilled in identifying and analysing problems to lead changes in policy or practices. You’ll develop these skills by identifying, planning and implementing research in your chosen area, and analysing and communicating the findings.

English Language Requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

• IELTS 6.0 with no component score below 5.5

• TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 20 in each individual component

• Duolingo English Language Test - 100 overall with minimum of 90 in each component

• or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.
